THE WIVES 
OF 
THE PROPHET

 

The first wife was Khadigah who was a rich merchant of Quraish, 15 years older than him. When she died, the Prophet married Sawdah Bent Zamaah and became engaged to Eishah Bent Abu Bakr when she was 6 years old and married her when she was nine (before she had reached puberty). The age of the prophet was 53 at the time. Also the prophet had another 9 wives and also those whose right hand he had possessed and who offered themselves to him. The Quran has many of verses recounting the problems between the prophet and his wives. (Surah 33:50-52 and Sura 66:1-5).

 

By contrast, we can see in the Bible that the prophets married only one wife and no mention is made of any problems between them. One would expect the wife of a prophet to be wise and holy.

 

But in the Torah, those who married more than one wife were not prophets but merely kings who may have received some prophecies. So, why did Prophet Mohammad need so many wives, especially at 53?
