The Qur'an affirms that Christians worship
the one Lord God who has no partner
This brief note was written to defend our faith and to respond to those who accuse us of polytheism and unbelief, and to clarify our belief in the oneness of the Lord God who has no partner, as stated in the Qur'an.
Surah al-'Ankabut 46. And do not argue with the People of the Book except in the best way, except with those who do wrong among them; and say, We have believed in what was sent down to us and what was sent down to you. Our God and your God is one, and to Him we submit. And it also says:
Surah Yunus 94 If you are in doubt about what We have sent down to you, then ask those who read the Book before you. The truth has certainly come to you from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters.
The previous verse confirms that what has come in the Qur'an must be consistent with the teachings of the Tawrah and the Gospel, because the author is one, and there should not be any fundamental contradictions.
Surah Al 'Imran 45 When the angels said, O Maryam, indeed Allah gives you good news of a word from Him, whose name is al-Masih 'Isa ibn Maryam, distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near (45). And he will speak to the people in the cradle and in maturity (old man) and will be among the righteous (46).
Surah al-Nisa' 171 O People of the Book, do not go to excess in your religion and do not say about Allah anything but the truth. Indeed, al-Masih 'Isa ibn Maryam is the Messenger of Allah and His word which He cast to Maryam and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers, and do not say, Three. Stop—it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is only one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and sufficient is Allah as Disposer.
The Qur'an clarifies in the first verse that the Masih is the Word of Allah and is mentioned in the masculine (that is, a person), and since Allah cast him (so he exists with Him); and in the second verse in the feminine (and since the word is what expresses the person, he is the one who expresses Allah, who is unseen). This is what the Gospel proclaims: The Masih is the Word of Allah, the brightness of His glory, and the express image of his person and upholding all things by the word of his power. It is known in Scripture and history that the Masih’s time on earth was 33 and a half years, and he was never an old man. So what is the explanation of this difference?
And in the Qur'an, Allah has a Throne borne by the angels, and He is the only Creator:
Surah al-A'raf 54 Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then rose over the Throne. He covers the night with the day, chasing it swiftly, and the sun, the moon, and the stars are subjected by His command. Unquestionably, to Him belongs the creation and the command. Blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds.
Surah al-Zumar 75 And you will see the angels surrounding the Throne, glorifying with the praise of their Lord. And judgment will be made between them in truth, and it will be said, Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
Surah al-Furqan 59 The One who created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days, then rose over the Throne. He is the All-Merciful, so ask about Him one well-informed.
Surah al-Haqqah 17 And the angels will be on its edges, and on that Day the Throne of your Lord will be carried above them by eight.
Surah al-Tawbah 129 But if they turn away, say, Allah is sufficient for me; there is no deity except Him. In Him I place my trust, and He is the Lord of the mighty Throne.
Surah al-Qalam 42 On the Day when the shin will be uncovered, and they will be called to prostrate, but they will not be able.
And in Sahih Muslim (2612) from Abu Hurayrah: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “If one of you fights his brother, let him avoid the face for Allah created him upon his image.” So can the unlimited Allah appear in the form of a limited human who sits on a Throne and unveils a shin?
And the Qur'an affirms that Allah has a Spirit:
Surah Yusuf 87 O my sons, go and seek out Yusuf and his brother, and do not despair of the Spirit of Allah. Indeed, none despairs of the Spirit of Allah except the disbelieving people.
Surah al-Hijr 29 Then when I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My Spirit, fall down to him in prostration.
Surah al-Baqarah 253 Those messengers—We favored some of them over others. Among them were those whom Allah spoke to, and He raised some of them in degrees. And We gave 'Isa ibn Maryam the clear signs and We supported him with the Holy Spirit. Had Allah willed, those who came after them would not have fought after the clear proofs had come to them; but they differed—some believed and some disbelieved. Had Allah willed, they would not have fought; but Allah does what He wills.
Surah al-Anbiya' 91 And she who guarded her chastity— We breathed into her of Our Spirit, and We made her and her son a sign for the worlds.
The Gospel states that Allah is the one who breathed because He is the only Creator. If the angel Jibril were the one who breathed, then he would be a partner with Allah in creation, and this is impossible because that would be associating partners with Allah.
And the Lord God explains how He created the first human (Adam) in the Tawrah in the Book of Genesis:
Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed Adam from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. And Adam became a living soul. … 18 And the LORD God said, “It is not good that Adam should be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” … 21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the LORD God built the rib that He had taken from Adam into a woman, and He brought her to Adam.
From the preceding verses we understand that Allah is the one who breathed, which means that Allah has a Spirit. It is impossible that the angel Jibril did so; otherwise he would have shared with Allah in the act of creation, which belongs to Allah alone. And Ya'qub’s saying to his sons that they should not despair of the Spirit of Allah would make the reliance of Yusuf’s brothers upon the angel Jibril and not upon Allah, and thus the angel Jibril would be a partner with Allah. Far be it that this should be so.
From the foregoing, we understand and are assured that God has a Word that expresses Him, and He has a Spirit who fills the universe. And since God is unlimited and it is not possible for the limited (human beings) to fully understand the Unlimited, therefore we must accept and believe what He has revealed about Himself.
Who is the God whom Christians worship:
Christians worship the eternal, everlasting God, the only Creator of the entire universe and the One who is able to do all things, as stated in First Timothy 1: 17, the King of the ages
who is immortal and invisible, the wise God alone; to Him be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. And in First Timothy 6: 15 He will display it in His own time, the blessed and only Sovereign: King of kings and Lord of lords,16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see; to Him be honor and eternal power. Amen.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that God created humankind in His likeness, in His image (and this is also in the Torah), and a human being has a body, a spirit, and a soul each with its own inherent properties; the body
the body (the human body) eats, drinks, and grows, and the spirit (the human spirit) is the means of communion with God
and the soul (the human soul) is what bears human nature. These three are in a single, perfect union that is the human being.
- For example, electricity exists, but we do not see it; however, if it runs through a dedicated wire, we immediately find that the wire glows and light is generated from it and heat comes out of it, yet both still remain in the electricity, for when the electricity is cut off, the light and the heat cease; nevertheless, electricity has its own inherent properties: if a person touches it, it shocks (but it does not give light or warmth), and the light generated from it gives light (but it does not warm or shock), and the heat that comes from it warms (but it does not give light or shock). We find that the inherent properties of light and heat differ from the inherent properties of electricity, which is neither seen nor touched, yet from it light and heat are generated (or proceed) and it still contains them. Electricity is known by its shocking power and is seen in the light generated from it and the heat that comes out of it, and they still remain in it and it is impossible to separate these three, for they are in a perfect, unitary union (namely, electricity).
However, God is not like this, for He has no equal: the unseen divine Being (the Father) who lives by His Spirit (the Holy Spirit) and the Word who became incarnate ( the Son who expresses God — the Mind of God — the exact imprint of God’s essence) and each of them has all the inherent attributes and works of God (creation, omnipotence, wisdom, love, goodness, ...) in perfect equality and perfect unity and the Unlimited God cannot be comprehended by our limited mind, but God enlightens our understanding and reveals to our minds and hearts so that we may know Him, understand Him, and receive Him.
- There are many verses in the Torah that confirm this divine revelation:
- Isaiah 48: 16 Draw near to me. Hear this: I have not spoken from the beginning in secret. From the time it came to be, I was there" And now the Lord GOD has sent me and His Spirit.
Isaiah 9: 6 For to us a child is born, to us is given an son, and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God , Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. ( How can a child be born as a human and be a son and be the one God at the same time)
- Isaiah 7: 14 But the Lord Himself will give you a sign: behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. (The word Immanuel means God with us)
Micah 5: 2 "But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of
Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from the days of eternity". (Who is the One who is from eternity—how can He be born in the village of Bethlehem and come forth from there?)
